A Streetcar Named Desire at Old Town Playhouse - 01/11/08 - 01/26/08
In 1946, A Streetcar Named Desire cemented William's reputation as a great American playwright, winning him a New York's Critics Circle Award and a Pulitzer Prize. The time is post-WW II New Orleans, as Blanche DuBois unexpectedly comes to live with her sister, Stella, and Stella's blue collar husband, Stanley Kowalski. It is summertime, the heat is oppressive, and the brutish Stanley torments the disturbed Blanche as her frail reality crumbles around her. Among the play's greatest achievements is the depiction of the psychology of working class characters. Williams portrays these characters on their own terms, without romanticizing them. A Streetcar Named Desire is considered one of the finest plays in Williams’ grand opus.
